One of the definitions for mythology is “a set of stories or beliefs about a particular person, institution, or situation, especially when exaggerated or fictitious.” It is also defined as a collection of myths, especially one belonging to a particular religion or cultural tradition. A fairytale is “a made up story about magical and imaginary beings and lands.” When I created The Magical Mermaid and the Moon I wanted to create a fairytale/myth as to why the ocean water moves the way it does today with all of the tides and waves. There are so many myths about how the Earth was hundreds of thousands of years ago, so I posed the question, what if there WAS a time when the entire ocean was still? Yes, completely still and also occupied by different life forms that acted just as we do today! Well, the magical mermaid and the moon paints a picture of what this time could have possibly looked like on Earth. I remember growing up and being enamored with Jack and the Beanstalk. The fairytale was beautiful to me. It opened my imagination up to a world where giants could have possibly existed. (It is still up for debate, there are many people who believe giants did exist). Was there a fairytale that you loved as a child or perhaps even as an adult? Fairytales and myths are fun and inspire hope, wonder, and curiosity. It is my hope that this magical story forever changes the way you look at the moon and the ocean and that it becomes a fairytale passed down for years to come!
